It is estimated that 30 percent of people in America do not get the proper amount of sleep. It is normal to occasionally have a sleepless night. However, chronic sleep deprivation may be a sign of a sleep disorder. That is why many people may need sleep therapy.

People may be referred to a sleep clinic if they suffer from insomnia, sleep apnea or narcolepsy. Insomnia is a condition where a person has a problem staying asleep or falling asleep. Sleep apnea is a condition that causes a person to stop breathing several times during the night. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes excessive drowsiness.

Additionally, people who are chronically sleep-deprived may need sleep therapy. Sleep deprivation can cause moodiness, excessive daytime sleepiness and moodiness. It can also increase the risk of certain health conditions such as diabetes and depression.

Types of Sleep Studies

Adult PSG- PSG is short for polysomnography. It is a type of sleep study where a person’s eye movement, muscle activity, heart rhythm and brain activity are monitored during the study. A CPAP is not used during this sleep study.

Pediatric PSG- This is the same type of study that is performed on adults. Pediatric patients will also have their muscle activity, heart rhythm, brain activity and eye movement recorded. No CPAP machine is used during this study. This sleep study may include ETCO2 monitoring.

Split PSG-This sleep study is recommended for adult patients. It is often recommended for people who are getting a sleep study done for the first time. The patient will be closely-monitored during the sleep study. CPAP therapy may be used during this procedure if necessary.

Titration PSG-If a person needs a CPAP machine, then they may need to get titration PSG. Titration PSG is performed to determine the amount of air pressure that one needs from the CPAP machine. A person will also need to have their vital signs monitored.

Multiple Sleep Latency Testing

This sleep study is recommended for people who suffer from narcolepsy or daytime drowsiness. The purpose of this test is to determine how quickly a person can fall asleep.

MWT

This test determines how alert a person is during the day. A person will sit in a room with no noise or bright light. A low-voltage light will then be placed in the room and a person will try to stay awake for 20 minutes during a two hour period. A person’s heart rate and oxygen levels will be monitored during the study. People who work in safety professions and public transportation may need to get this test.

Sleep Apnea Link

Apnea Link monitors a person’s heart rate and oxygen levels while they are sleeping. It is similar to noctural oximetry. Doctors are able to use this data in order to determine whether a person suffers from sleep apnea.
