HSA & FSA CPAP Supplies
CPAP machine supplies are a medical necessity. In this blog, we’ll be talking about HSA and FSA CPAP supplies, what CPAP supplies are FSA eligible, and how to use your funds. Since the end of the year will be here before we know it, it’s a great time to review the differences between FSA and HSA funds, as well as the expenses these funds can cover, like CPAP machine supplies.
What is FSA?
A flexible spending account is set up as an optional part of employer benefit plans, but not all companies offer the option. In most cases, you’ll enroll in your company’s FSA at the same time as open enrollment for medical insurance. If you’re a CPAP patient, CPAP supplies are FSA eligible.
With an FSA, employees can opt to set aside a portion of each paycheck to go into a flexible spending account that can be used to pay for qualified expenses. One of the most popular types of FSA is specifically reserved for use with medical-related expenses. The current limit for health FSAs is $2,750. Self-employed people are not eligible for a flexible spending account.
Since FSA money deducted from the employee’s pay is not subject to payroll taxes, each healthcare dollar spent stretches further. Normally, FSA funds do not roll over from year to year, so these are usually “use it or lose it” benefits, but due to the pandemic, rollover funds will be allowed for 2021.
What is HSA?
A health savings account can be added to annually without losing money at the end of the year—there is no expiration date for HSA funds. Both FSA and HSA funds are spent on items not typically covered by traditional health insurance. These include copays for a doctor visit, dental and vision costs, personal healthcare products like hearing aids, birth control pills, and medical devices. Medical equipment like blood pressure monitors, breast pumps, and CPAP supplies are FSA eligible, or you can use an HSA for reimbursement. Some FSA and HSA accounts will have a special debit card, while others must be reimbursed through your employer. For details of how reimbursements will be handled, talk to your company’s benefits plan administrator.
